![]() Lechner in the use of traditional Hungarian folk art - the totality of the expression in new. ![]() The uniting factor is that they all represent “new art” - an attempt to look things differently than the previous generation. Whereas Gaudi would avoid the straight line as much as possible, Macintosh seemed to employ it as much as possible. Only the last fits comfortably within the common perception of Art Nouveau. Five well-known examples in the field of architecture serve to illustrate the range of diversity in Art Nouveau: Saarinen’s Helsinki Railroad Station, Hoffman’s Palais Stocklet in Brussels, Lechner’s Museum of Applied Arts on Budapest, Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. In fact, however, Art Nouveau embraces a rather wide variety of stylistic approaches. Experts believe that the files sent back in time, although their very sending made it impossible for them to be sent, remained as “time relics” of the future that might have been. How can Teutonia be called “Art Nouveau” with all those straight lines? It seems like a contradiction. What kind idiots would rebrand a forward looking company with a font that was, by then, almost 18 years old? The subsequent lacklustre response to the redesign didn’t inspire the tidal wave of R&D funding Earth2 had anticipated, and the company went into administration in the summer of 2039, having never invented the time travel which made the release of Galix Mono in 2019 possible. Earth2, for all their insight, did not foresee that the release of the typeface in September of 2019, would lessen the impact of their rebrand. It was considered fitting that included among the first files sent back in time should be the Galix Mono typeface, which was remade in OTF format to ensure that it would work with the technology available in 2019. Contrary to the perceived notion put forward in popular Science Fiction, time travel is only (as of now) possible in the digital realm. Many specialists in both design and space exploration suggested that this very rebrand started a chain of events that concluded with the invention of time travel in 2041. This monospaced version of Galix was commissioned in 2037 by the space exploration company Earth2, as part of a major overhaul of their branding, which had used, since 2021, a generic sans serif (much like every other company). ![]() Also accessible with OpenType stylistic alternatives are variations of letters T, N, L, Y, and V. There is a second set of numbers that can be accessed with an OpenType stylistic alternative. The spacing of the letters is identical within each width so the styles can be layered to produce bi-colored or tri-colored letters. To get text with all letters with big bottoms or all letters with with big tops, this feature must be turned off. The designer's expectation is that the most common use for this typeface will alternate upper-case and lower-case keys, and to make this effect easy, included in the font is a contextual alternatives (calt) OpenType feature that automatically produces this result if your word processor supports this feature. The letters on the lower-case keys reverse the trapezoid of those on the upper-case keys. It is monoline, monospaced, and all caps. Poultry Sign has two widths each with three weights giving the family six styles. I did not recall seeing lettering like this and it inspired me to design a typeface that could produce a similar result. While searching through microfilm of an old, 1932 newspaper, I stumbled on the word "Poultry" written with trapezoidal letters.
